Birding excursions

The Atlantic Forest is comprised of a range of habitat types [1]. REGUA extends in altitude from 35-2000 m, however most of the accessible forest lies below 900 m. Join our organised off-reserve birding excursions and explore varied habitats over a range of altitudes that comprise the Atlantic Forest biome, including humid lowland Atlantic Forest, high elevation montane Atlantic Forest, dry Atlantic Forest, restinga, salt pans and coasts.

Habitats: Coast, restinga, mangroves, salt pans.
Key birds include: Restinga Antwren, Clapper Rail, Little Blue Heron, Roseate Spoonbill, American Oystercatcher, Collared Plover, Minute Hermit, Tawny-crowned Pygmy-Tyrant, Hangnest Tody-Tyrant.

Habitats: Wet pasture, fields, rivers.
Key birds include: Whistling Heron, Ash-throated Crake, Toco Toucan, American Kestrel, Peach-fronted Parakeet, Streamer-tailed Tyrant, White-rumped Monjita, Grassland Yellow-Finch, Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch, Long-tailed Reed Finch.

Habitats: Montane forest.
Key birds include: Scale-throated Hermit, White-throated Hummingbird, Brazilian Ruby, Giant Antshrike, Rufous-backed Antvireo, Rufous-tailed Antthrush, Hooded Berryeater, Bare-throated Bellbird, Black-and-gold Cotinga.



Habitats: Lowland forest, wet pasture.
Key birds include: Giant Snipe, Black-banded Owl, Tawny-browed Owl, Striped Owl, Mottled Owl, Black-capped Screech-Owl, American Barn Owl, Common Potoo, Scissor-tailed Nightjar, Spot-tailed Nightjar.

Habitats: Montane forest, high montane forest.
Key birds include: Grey-winged Cotinga, Itatiaia Thistletail, Plovercrest, Large-tailed Antshrike, Rufous-tailed Antbird, Dusky-tailed Antbird, Rufous Gnateater, Mouse-coloured Tapaculo, Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Diademed Tanager, Bay-chested Warbling-Finch.

Habitats: Montane forest, high montane forest,
Key birds include: Dusky-legged Guan, Spot-winged Wood-Quail, Giant Antshrike, Tufted Antshrike, Rufous-backed Antvireo, Sharp-billed Treehunter, Rufous-tailed Antthrush, Rufous-breasted Leaftosser, Black-billed Scythebill, Hooded Berryeater, Half-collared Sparrow.



Habitats: Remnants of Atlantic dry forest.
Key birds include: Three-toed Jacamar, Blue-winged Macaw, Black-necked Aracari, Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Serra Antwren, Curl-crested Jay, Tawny-headed Swallow, Orange-headed Tanager, Hepatic Tanager, Gilt-edged Tanager, Firewood-gatherer.
